Sun, Sand, and Cyber Safety: Your Summer Travel Security Guide
Summer is finally here, Ohio! July is the peak of the travel season, and whether you’re heading down to Hocking Hills for a weekend cabin getaway, riding the coasters at Cedar Point, or boarding a flight for a tropical vacation, the last thing you want to worry about is a compromised bank account.
While you’re busy packing your sunscreen and flip-flops, cybercriminals are packing their bags with digital traps. Traveling naturally throws us off our normal routines, which makes us a bit more vulnerable to scams. At Unity Catholic FCU, we want to make sure your hard-earned money and personal information stay secure while you’re out making memories.
Smart Digital Habits for the Road
Before you back out of the driveway or head through the TSA line, take a few quick steps to lock down your digital footprint:
Set Travel Notifications: Let us know where you’re headed! You can easily set a travel notice on your Unity Catholic FCU debit or credit cards through our mobile banking app or by giving us a call. This prevents your cards from being accidentally blocked for "suspicious regional activity" when you try to buy souvenirs.
Beware of Public Wi-Fi: Free airport, hotel, and coffee shop Wi-Fi is incredibly convenient, but it’s rarely secure. Avoid logging into your mobile banking or entering password-protected sites while on public networks. If you must check your accounts, use your cellular data or a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Keep Your Devices Locked: It sounds simple, but make sure your phone, tablet, and laptop require a passcode, fingerprint, or facial recognition to unlock. If a device gets left behind at a rest stop or pool deck, a strong lock screen is your first line of defense.
Watch Out for "Juice Jacking": Cybercriminals can modify public USB charging stations (like the ones in airports) to install malware on your phone or steal your data. To play it safe, plug your standard charger into an AC wall outlet instead, or travel with a portable power bank.
No matter where your adventures take you this July, a little bit of preparation goes a long way in keeping your finances secure. By staying mindful of your digital surroundings, you can focus on what truly matters: relaxing and enjoying time with family and friends. Safe travels, everyone, and remember that your team at Unity Catholic FCU is always here to help keep your financial journey smooth and secure!
