Caps, Gowns, and Cash: Your College Financial Game Plan
Congratulations to the Class of 2026! As you toss your caps and celebrate your achievements across Northeast Ohio, the excitement of the next chapter—college—is likely front and center. Whether you are heading to an Ohio powerhouse like OSU or CSU, or venturing out of state, this transition is about more than just picking a major; it’s your first major step into financial adulthood. At Unity Catholic FCU, we want to make sure you head to campus with more than just extra-long twin sheets—we want you to have a solid financial foundation.
Mastering the Essentials: Loans and Credit
Navigating the world of higher education costs can feel like a full-time job. To keep your stress levels low and your focus on your studies, here are the key areas to master before move-in day:
Exhaust Your Federal Options First: Before looking at private loans, ensure you’ve completed your FAFSA. Federal loans often come with fixed interest rates (currently around 6.39% for undergraduate students for the 2025-2026/2026-2027 cycle) and more flexible repayment protections.
Bridge the Gap with Private Loans: If scholarships and federal aid don't cover everything, Unity Catholic FCU offers private student loans through our partner, LendKey. These can cover tuition, books, and even a new laptop, often with no application fees and the option to make small interest-only payments while you're still in school.
Build Credit, Don't Just Spend It: College is the ideal time to start building a credit score, which you’ll need later for an apartment or a car. Consider a student credit card with a low limit. The goal isn't to carry a balance—it's to make one small purchase a month (like your Netflix sub or a tank of gas) and pay it off in full to prove you're a responsible borrower.
The "Borrow Only What You Need" Rule: Just because you are approved for a certain loan amount doesn't mean you have to take it all. Calculate your actual costs for the semester and only borrow the minimum. Future-you will be very grateful for the lower monthly payments after graduation!
Let’s Build Your Future Together
The "Real World" comes at you fast, but you don't have to navigate it alone. From setting up your first "adult" checking account to finding a student loan that fits your budget, the team at Unity Catholic FCU is here to support our Ohio members every step of the way. We’re incredibly proud of your hard work, and we can’t wait to see what you achieve next. Go get 'em, Class of 2026!
