Planting the Seeds of Financial Success This April!

April is National Credit Union Youth Month, and at Unity Catholic FCU, we believe there’s no better time to help our youngest members in Ohio grow their financial roots. Teaching kids how to budget doesn't have to be a chore; in fact, it’s a wonderful way to empower them with the confidence to handle life’s "rainy days" and big dreams alike. Whether they are saving up for a new game or planning for their first car, learning the value of a dollar today sets the stage for a lifetime of financial security.

Simple Ways to Teach Budgeting at Every Age

Budgeting is essentially just a plan for your money. To make it stick, try these hands-on strategies to get your kids excited about their finances:

  • The Three-Jar System: For younger children, use three clear jars labeled Spend, Save, and Share. This provides a visual way to see their money grow and teaches them to prioritize different goals.

  • Needs vs. Wants: Use your next trip to the grocery store as a "field trip." Point out the difference between the bread we need for lunch and the treats we want for dessert.

  • Set a "Goal of the Month": Help them pick a specific item they want to buy. Calculate how much they need to set aside each week from their allowance or chores to reach it.

  • Introduce Student Banking: April is the perfect time to open a Student Savers account. Having their own account at the credit union makes them feel like a "grown-up" and introduces them to the concept of earning dividends.

  • Use Tools Like Zogo: For tech-savvy teens, our Zogo financial literacy app turns learning about money into a game where they can earn real-life rewards while mastering budgeting basics.
