Sun, Sand, and Cyber-Safety: Protecting Your Finances This Summer
Summer in Ohio is finally here! Whether you’re planning a road trip to the Lake Erie islands, heading down to the Hocking Hills, or flying somewhere tropical, May is the perfect time to start prepping. But while you're busy packing the sunscreen and sandals, don't forget to pack a little extra digital protection. As we head into the summer of 2026, cyber-scammers are getting more creative—especially with AI-powered travel scams and sophisticated phishing attempts designed to catch you while you’re relaxed and off the clock. At Unity Catholic FCU, we want to ensure your vacation memories are the only thing you bring home, not a compromised account.
Stay One Step Ahead of Summer Scams
Cybersecurity doesn't have to be complicated. By following a few simple "rules of the road," you can keep your personal information and your hard-earned money safe while you travel:
Be Skeptical of "Too Good to Be True" Deals: Scammers are using AI to create incredibly realistic websites and emails for fake vacation rentals or "last-minute" flight deals. Always book directly through reputable sites and double-check the URL before entering your credit card info.
Lock Down Your Tech: Before you leave, ensure all your devices are updated with the latest security patches. Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on your banking and email accounts—it’s the single most effective way to block unauthorized access.
Public Wi-Fi is a No-Go for Banking: That "Free Airport Wi-Fi" might be a trap set by a hacker to intercept your data. If you need to check your balance or pay a bill, use your phone’s cellular data or a trusted VPN (Virtual Private Network).
Watch Out for "Juice Jacking": Avoid using public USB charging stations in malls or airports. Scammers can use these ports to export your data or install malware. Stick to your own wall plug and cord.
Use Your Credit Card for Travel: When booking hotels or car rentals, use your Unity Catholic credit card. Credit cards offer stronger fraud protection and "chargeback" rights compared to debit cards if a travel merchant turns out to be fraudulent.
We’ve Got Your Back!
At Unity Catholic FCU, your financial peace of mind is our top priority. Our fraud monitoring systems work 24/7 to catch suspicious activity, but you are our best line of defense! Before you head out, make sure your contact information is up to date in our system so we can reach you quickly if we spot something unusual. If you’re planning a big trip, give us a call or stop by our Parma or Brunswick offices to let us know—we’ll make sure your out-of-state purchases go through smoothly while keeping the "bad guys" out. Enjoy the sunshine, stay alert, and have a wonderful, worry-free summer!
