The Ultimate Guide for Saving Money While Dorm Shopping

Now that high school has officially ended, college is on the mind of many kids and parents. One of the more exciting aspects is getting to decorate your dorm room. Of course, you have Pinterest boards full of decoration ideas (who doesn’t?) and mom has that huge list of things that she thinks you will need, but here are some great ways to prepare for dorm life, while also saving a buck or two.

  • Don’t shy away from hand-me-downs. Free is best when in college. If a family member has an old chair or some shelves, take it with you. Even something small like extra bowls or appliances. You can always paint shelves or put a throw over an ugly chair.

  • Be crafty! Paint a canvas or create a wall decoration. Pinterest has so many easy crafts and DIYs that are super cute to use as a decoration! Even just hanging some cheap white lights around will make your dorm room super comfy!

  • Thrift! Thrift stores can really come in handy when you want some cheap decorations. I’ve gotten things from decorations to throw pillows from thrift stores. Some things can also be painted to fit your color scheme!

  • Get a tapestry or a school flag. These take up a lot of wall space. You can even make your own tapestry by tie dying or painting a cheap white sheet.

  • Use pictures! Chances are, you are going hang up some pictures of you friends and family, so why not create a wall decoration out of it? A dorm room classic is to use clothes pins to hang up printed pictures. It is super cute and all you need is clothes pins, string, and printed pictures!

  • Coordinate with your roommate. Dorm rooms aren’t that big, so if you split the price of decorations with someone, it will help you stay within budget! Plus, you will get to bond with your roommate before move in, which makes college life seem a bit less scary!
